coming to play

"Lost" and "Studio 60" really brought their "A" games this past week, dispelling some cynicism that had built on my part.

First, regarding "Lost", I was skeptical that a Jin/Sun flashback story could be so compelling after the season 2 dud "The Whole Truth", but I was impressed how skillfully they connected Jin to Sun's English tutor (and apparent lover) Jae and explored Sun's deception as a recurring theme. Plus, I was happy to see they didn't abandon the story of the three captive castaways to focus just on Jin, Sun, and Sayid's rescue efforts. And Ben's offer to send Jack home is an unexpected twist that could definitely have some major ramifications in the immediate future.

Then, "Studio 60" redeemed itself in a big way after a lukewarm offering. Tonight's episode may even be their best to date. After weeks of disjointed character arcs passing as a plot, they finally knocked out a great Matt/Harriet story emotionally on par with Sorkin's best efforts on "Sports Night." And it was a relief to find Harriet's Christianity ringing true for once, instead of feeling like a hokey caricature. The incorporation of musical guest Sting's accoustic lute playing into the show underpinned some heavy moments, making for truly remarkable television.

In other words, keep up the good work, guys.
